Tony has just been dumped and he feels his life is going nowhere fast. His colleague suggests he becomes a mentor to a troubled teenager and so Tony embarks on this new phase of his life. But nobody knows that Tony was in care when he was a youngster, so this is the story of how he copes with trying to be a friend to a boy who doesn't want it and how Tony works through his demons from his childhood.
This is not a particularly happy story. Tony struggles with connecting with Jordan. The chickens are the only lightness to his life. The story is part told in first person and part the emails Tony sends to both his mentoring contact and his ex-girlfriend. I liked this mix of writing.
This was an easy read, I kept thinking of Tony when I wasn't reading it. I also thought of Tony after finishing it.

The Redemption Trials by Julie McLaren
Wayne is at his desk at the admissions hall to Hell. Lottie enters and Wayne's life - or neverending death - is not the same again. While he tries to get her to a better place, preferably not here, he finds out that it's not just her that's in the wrong place, but many others. But Wayne doesn't car about them as he's maybe falling in love a little.
I expected this to be a bit more zany from the description, but it was more of a gentle road trip story. The humour is subtle and I quickly grew to like Wayne's un-heroicness. He wants to do good by Lottie, but is a bit of a wuss.
I enjoyed this story as it was a little different to most things I've read.

The Butterfly Effect by Julie McLaren
This is a very tense psychological thriller. Amy wakes up in a strange locked room after being kidnapped. She recounts what led to her being there from her happy life to being stalked and losing her family and friends.
I read this in just two sittings, I just didn't want to put it down as I followed Any into her spiral of despair and how she planned to get out of it. The story is told in Amy's first person, so we are introduced to her past life as she recalls it. To me this made the story very insular and claustrophobic and kept me wanting to know more.
I'd say this is a good read, but it made me feel creeped out. Just what a good psychological thriller should do.

Music of the Spheres by Julie McLaren
When God realises mankind is about to ruin Earth, he gets a bit miffed and decides to have words. The people of Englandshire don't notice the plagues He sends as He is a bit out of practice and so He decides he needs to do something a bit more to get on the nightly news. Nigel comes to His attention, so He decides that Nigel shall be His prophet. As you can imagine, Nigel is not too impressed with this turn of events. All Nigel wants is to be abducted by aliens.
With a plot synopsis something like that, how could I not be drawn in. Just a few paragraphs and I was hooked. This is a delightful story. Just the right side of surreal and it's very small town British. It is witty without being overly clever.
I liked the character of Nigel. He really doesn't want to do much, just get on with his small life looking to his big horizons. I also liked God and the supporting characters. They were well rounded out.
In short this was a treat of a read that I came across unexpectedly and it's reads like this that make me love my Kindle and finding new authors.
