As with Nick Spalding's other novels we have the "he said / she said" swapping forth of chapters. I enjoy this method of getting both sides of the story. This time, it's brother and sister Daniel and Hayley Daley who tell us of when their grandmother left them a dilapidated house in her will and they decide to do it up. Obviously they haven't got a clue.
This is not an original story by any means, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was very lightweight and I'm sure more could have gone wrong. Perhaps that was the beauty of it. It didn't drag me down. If I was watching it on screen, it would be in bright colours, rather than dingy greys.
And who wouldn't want a pet Pat the Cow?

Love ... Among the Stars by Nick Spalding
I didn't fancy the third in this series but jumped straight to the fourth as this storyline looked more my thing. As with the others in this series, the story is told by both Jamie (on his blog) and Laura (in her diary) with the chapters going back and forth.
It seems that tJamie and Laura have been publishing the previous books themselves (we don't need Nick any more haha) and they have just published book number 3, so we follow them as they go through publishing and promoting it. As ever, things never run smoothly.
My favourite bit was where they were invited to the film premier. As it happened, things didn't really go as badly as they expected it to. I also like the recurring character - you'll know who it is when you read it.
This was a very easy book to read. Yes, it can be crude at times, but I found this to be quite a romantic story. Jamie and Laura really love each other. I didn't find it "laugh out loud" but did find it sweet and humerous.

Wordsmith by Nick Spalding
Max Bloom is back and this time he's had a year to hone his powers and he's the most powerful wordsmith in the land, but certainly not the greatest. He's still a teenager (in lurve) and is still immature.
This is a cracking romp and I flew through the story.
I'm unsure of the lower end of the target audience of this as there is some very minor swearing (such as bloody hell) which would make me reluctant to recommend it to my 10 year old nephew, even though I think he'd love the action and adventure. I certainly enjoyed it, the pace was high and it was very exciting.

Love ......... and Sleepless Nights by Nick Spalding
Love ... And Sleepless Nights is the follow on to Love ..... From Both Sides where Jamie and Laura are now married and accidentally pregnant. Again, it's from both sides, Jamie's blog and Laura's letters to her mother. As a writing concept, it's fantastic. It's almost like getting two books for the price of one.
The tale as told is really good. I really liked the bit where Laura has the baby (and the run up to it). I can imagine her exasperation at Jamie.
In all, a great read. If you like Spalding, you know what you are getting.

Love... From Both Sides by Nick Spalding
I'll start off by saying I am a fan of Mr Spalding's work. I liked his Life... books and also his shorts (even the killer hedgehogs)
I dipped into this book to see how it read and a few hours later I'd finished it. I read it with a smile on my face for most of the time. The other times was a grimace.
This - as the title infers - is the same story of two people meeting and falling in love, but from both sides. I thought that made it a more interesting story. I enjoyed reading the one point of view, then the same situation from the other side.
Yes, it was crude at times. I see there's a few one star reviews on Amazon. But I actually chortled a few times and I don't often do that.

Interrogating Nick Spalding
Next in my sights is Nick Spalding, an author who is often found hanging out in Amazon's charts. If you have read one of his "Life ....." books, then you'll probably know him as much as he knows himself.
How do you strike the balance between writing something you want to write and writing something that people want to read, in terms of the compromises you make, if any?
I'm lucky. I tend to write commercial fiction so I always try to write what I hope people will want to read. If that isn't something I also want to write then I guess it doesn't get written!
What excites, attracts or appeals to you about the genre(s) you write in.
There's nothing quite like making a person laugh. If you can do it from several hundred miles away weeks after you cracked the joke, then it's even better.
Do you have a box, drawer, folder etc where you keep thoughts and ideas for future stories? Such as names you have come across, bits of dialogue, ideas, characters - even if you have no idea when you might use them?
Nope. I fly by the seat of my pants. I trust my caffeine addled brain to come up with the goods when I sit down to write. Things tend to get stick in the drift nets of my memory, ready to pop up when I need a good gag or plot point.
How much of you is in your characters? Which of your characters is the you that you’d most like to be? Or be with ?
A lot. I write observational humour (for the most part) and I guess my characters have to share my observations, because I'm the one putting the words in their mouths. I suppose I'd most like to be Max from The Cornerstone, but only because I'd get to be a teenager again. I'd try to make a better job of it second time around.
What type of book do you like reading? Is it the same genre as you write?
I read a lot of different genres, but my favourites are fantasy, horror and humour. Funnily enough, those are the genres I also write in, which makes sense, I suppose.
What lengths do you go to to convince us readers that your book has the X factor?
No way you can do that. Ultimately it's up to them to decide whether your work has the X Factor. The best you can do as a writer is write the best book you can and hope it captures the imagination of the reading public. Being as professional as possible with your editing, blurb and cover will see you a long way, but there's an alchemy about guessing how hot a book is going to be which is impossible to understand. Even those big, bad publishers don't know for certain what makes a book have the X Factor, otherwise they'd only put out hits themselves.
How do you feel when a reader points out the spelling mistake(s) you have made?
On the one hand disgusted with myself. On the other very thankful that they noticed and took the time to tell me about it.
What do you like most about visiting KUF?
The links to hardcore pornography they hide at the bottom of the forum page.
What is on your near horizon?
I'm currently writing a sequel to Love... From Both Sides, which should be out in the early summer.
Where can we find you for more information?

The Cornerstone by Nick Spalding
I read and enjoyed Life Without Breaks and have Life on a High ready for on the plane on holidays, but when I came across Nick describing his book as " The Cornerstone - It's got effeminate vampires, a six foot ex-special forces loner, a chick covered in tattoos and Susan Boyle in it. " How could it not be next on my reading list It's a very light hearted adventure, perhaps aimed at a younger audience, but I found it quite un-put-downable.
I liked that Max was just a typical teenaged boy who is too lazy to take any messing about. The whole of humanity is probably relying on him and he's "meh" . But, of course, that would be a short and boring adventure, so he steps up and gets on with it.
The baddies are nice and bad, the goodies are overwhelmed and the readers are along for the fantastic ride. This is a nice easy enjoyable read. 5 stars for this one Nick and hurry up with the next. After all, it only takes you a day or two to churn them out
